April 2002
A long-time resident told me that he had the urge to take a walk in our canyon--he hadn't done so in years. On his return, he embarked on a trip that took him to Washington, D.C. It was then he discovered a rash on his thighs. It was so annoying that he consulted a doctor, who told him, "You have poison oak." So beware, if the urge takes you to take a walk on the wild side as this individual did.
If you're a clubhouse renter, please take note the facility will be clean when you take possession of it. Should this not be the case, contact the manager, Joyce Bliss, immediately. The rental agreement you sign indicates that you will leave it "clean." Should you fail to do so, the Board has the option to charge you a cleaning fee. And if your guests spill on the carpet, you may be charged for the carpet's cleaning. And do note, on the weekends, that you're expected to be out by midnight. On occasion, we ask our security folks to escort you out, if you've overstayed your welcome. These details are spelled out in the agreement you sign. Please do comply so that Board members, or our manager, are not put in the position of playing "the heavy."
Coming UpIn anticipation of a new look, we've begun a campaign aimed at replacing rotten wood. Initially, we're replacing the bases of columns on a number of units. We'll then replace cracked, warped trim boards in patio areas. And, yes, we haven't forgotten the need to continue the replacement of old fences. And we're exploring the possibility of going to a card-entry system for the pool area. This last is in response to the continuing abuse of the entry system that necessitates recurring trips by a locksmith. He's not cheap.
Don't forget to set your lock ahead one hour on Saturday, April 6th, as Daylight Saving time begins.
In a single hour, a broken washing machine hose can leak up to 500 gallons of water. Avoid this expense and inconvenience by checking hose for:
If you find soft spots or brittleness near connections, replace hoses immediately. Also, do not forget to turn off the water to your washing machine before you leave on vacation.
Don't allow moisture to accumulate near the foundation. Termites are attracted to moisture and are more likely to enter a structure if the soil next to the foundation is consistently moist. Water should be diverted away from the foundation with properly functioning gutters, downspouts and splashblocks. Leaking faucets, water pipes and air conditioning units should be repaired, and the ground next to the foundation should be sloped so that surface water drains away from the building. Homes with poor drainage need to have tiles or drains installed.
When we moved to California from the east coast, it was our choice. When we settled in San Diego, it was our choice. When we purchased a home in an Association after reading all the governing documents, it was again our choice.
We knew California had a higher sales tax and also a privilege tax on our vehicle. Again, it was our choice. We all made choices at one time or another, some good and some bad, but they were our choices, and we learned by them.
In California we have State Statutes. In San Diego we have local ordinances, and living in an Association you have governing documents, and they all have to be enforced by those elected by the people to govern. And those who wish to appeal, there is an appeals process. Again, you have a choice.
To those who complain about Associations being too restrictive, they made a bad choice, but the choice was theirs, and only theirs. Also, I am sure there is a Realtor willing to sell their property; again, it is their choice, and good luck on their next choice. They will need it. Again, it is all about choices.
