CAUTION

Residents of Park Crest take note: there is an individual committing acts of vandalism to the vehicles of residents or their guests who use that street's ''guest parking'' spaces. If you should see an instance of destructive behavior, do not approach the individual concerned, but rather call the police. Then make your call a matter of record with our property manager.

HOMEOWNER FORUM

Homeowner forum will be held at 7:00 p.m. the night of the monthly board meeting. Monthly board meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at the clubhouse located at 5275 Rimpark Lane.

LIGHTING COMMITTEE

A new dilemma - children are swinging and hanging from the pole lights located around the community. The Board would like to find a solution by replacing or refurbishing these lights. There are many different options and price brackets when dealing with lighting. The Board would like to form a committee to research this issue and provide options for the Board to review. If you are interested, please attend the next board meeting or call Tracie at Preferred Property Managers at 888/339-3345 and let us know you are Interested.

SAME ANSWER

In a recent conversation with a homeowner - the subject was new fences - the individual concerned remarked that she had a ''vested interest'' in her home. Most immediately, she was concerned because she didn't feel the Board had given her the information and options which she felt she deserved as a homeowner. Then she remarked that she had not been able to attend the most recent monthly meeting where fences were to be discussed. Another individual, in another conversation, found fault with the Monterey Message because it did not go into detail on the Board's actions. However, this two-page publication can only ''announce''; it cannot ''detail.'' Again, there is no substitute for attending monthly meetings and taking advantage of homeowner input. Or those really interested can get a copy of the minutes of the monthly meetings - not to include the Executive Session minutes. Call the management co. The cost is $1.00 per page for reproduction and mailing.

GARAGE DOORS

In a recent walk thru of our property, we noticed that many of the' garage doors are very dirty. Homeowners are responsible for maintenance and appearance. If your garage door is in need of cleaning, please take a couple of minutes to hose off the excess dirt which has accumulated. Thank you for your cooperation.

CONGRATULATIONS

Fifty residents of the HOA have new patio fences. We tried to replace those fences that seemed to us the ''neediest.'' But there are those abroad who feel their fences were far ''needier.'' The decision was based on repeated inspections of our area by two board members. Those of you who are making do with the old wrecks can take heart. For we will keep in repair all of your gates and will keep your fences standing until they, too, can be replaced. Some of the latter may be undertaken before the year's end-if all of this budget year's funds have not been expended. And it's anticipated that we'll begin another round in earnest next spring.

ON THE BOARD: John L. Marsh

John Marsh is a retired Army officer as well as a retired University Professor. And, at one point, he combined both vocations; for he was not only a teaching faculty member, but the commander of a strategic intelligence detachment based on the university campus. The latter, utilizing the school's library, conducted classified research for the Department of the Army. And Colonel Marsh has vivid memories of being a junior officer assigned to the ''pickle factory'' on the far side of the Pentagon's parking lot. Almost daily, he carried shopping bags of classified documents from the one end to the other, admonished to be sure not to drop any. In later years, he was then just the officer to conduct an intensive look at security violations at the Pentagon during WWII.

As an English Department member--chairman for a time--Dr. Marsh survived the turbulent 60s. One of his especial tasks was faculty recruitment. He'd ask a young man to come in for an interview. The latter would arrive clean shaven and with a fresh haircut. Of course, the applicant would be in a coat and tie and he'd be wearing socks. And he'd be earnest and so respectful. What a change once he arrived in September. The coat and tie and socks would be gone. Yes, he had bathed, but he hadn't shaved. More disturbing, he knew just what should be abolished to make the university a place he could tolerate. Marsh recalls a late August interview w1111 a candidate who'd been an Eagle Scout. Could one of the latter be found wanting. 'the answer was ''yes.''

Dr. Marsh and his wife, Charlotte, moved to Villa Monterey in 1993. They wanted to be near their son, Dr. Arthur Marsh, a member of Kaiser Permanente's Department of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. Arthur and his wife and daughter live just over the hill in Tierrasanta Norte with other upwardly mobile young professionals. But they like cats. The Marshes are dog people, as many of you know.

PLEASE

The canyon walk just office pool greenbelt is one of the loveliest in the Villa Monterey. Why then do folks persist in littering it with trash. Sometimes it's beer bottles, but the other day, it was computer discs. The guilty party had strewn them to the right and to the left. Picking up the latter takes time away from more important chores.

NEXT MEETING

The next monthly Board Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at 6:00 p.m. at the clubhouse located in the community.
