Farewell

Mike, who has been our maintenance supervisor for some six years, has decided that it's time for him to retire. He's sold his F model in the COA and has bought a home in Escondido. In no time at all, he'll be on his way. Mike, you'll be missed by the many folks you helped in the course of your time with us.

An Editor's Note: As a young officer, Mike took part in the D Day Invasion. His job was to guide landing craft to the beach. In all, he made some twenty-three trips from ship to shore.

A Near Tragedy
Just the other day, your editor walked by the pool area and found the pool gate held open by a trash can. As he went to shut the gate, a voice cried out for him not to do so, "I've lost my key." In talking with the individual concerned, he made the point that it was important the gate be closed. No sooner had he said these words than a toddler who'd been playing on the greenbelt rushed in and headed toward the pool. Fortunately, the child's mother caught the youngster just in time.

Please, don't prop the pool gate open for any reason. If you can't find your pool key, another can be secured from the management company.

Clubhouse Rentals

Rentals are up and that means more of us need to be aware of the clubhouse Do's and Don'ts. For instance, portable stereos and the like need to be kept indoors- not taken out on the patio. All exterior doors need to be closed after l0 pm. As well, trash generated by a user needs to be taken away by the renter. These and other points are covered by Board Members arranging for rentals, but it is easy to forget that a "great" party from your point of view, can be nothing less than annoying to a family living in the immediate vicinity of the clubhouse. One irate gal, just after 10, went so far as to march out in her bathrobe and shut the clubhouse doors herself.

Graduation

This is graduation time in San Diego, and as space permits, your editor will recognize recent graduates. For instance, Jeni earned an M.A. in Human Resource Management, while Lisa was the salutatorian at her high school exercises. She will be attending Pepperdine in the fall.

Garden Hoses

Recent landscapes walks reveal that residents are not keeping their garden hoses out of sight. Exemptions are granted to those whose units face the canyon. However, note that our Rules Manual calls for these to be kept in hose saddles. Please comply.

At The Pool

Hello, residents of Villa Monterey. As you know, every summer there is a new pool monitor. This year, I was chosen. I am 20 years of age and currently a student at Mesa College. I was born and raised in San Diego County and I would consider myself to be a friendly and funny person with a great personality. So make sure you stop by the pool to cool off in the summer or just to meet someone new.

P.S. Don't forget to sign-in. Thank You.

Sizzlin' Summer Safety Tips

It is definitely getting warmer! With school out for the summer, more and more of our youngsters will be outdoors playing, and having a good time. As parents, we need to do our part to insure they can enjoy the summertime without getting burnt to a crisp.

But, before our "tips" this month, did you know ... It is now estimated that 80% of a person's lifetime sun damage actually occurs prior to age 18?!! The combination of intense, intermittent sun exposure, resulting in sunburn, increases a child's risk for developing cancer, like melanoma, later in life.

  1. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.
  2. Apply sunscreen everyday if you will be in the sun for more than 20 minutes. And do so 15-30 minutes before you go out into the sun.
  3. Pay particular attention to your ears, face, hands and arms. But, don't forget to sunscreen any part of your body not covered by knit clothing.

If you'd like more information for summer safety, contact the American Melanoma Foundation at 858 642-0128.
