ANCIENT HISTORY: 1974

The earliest minutes of the Villa Monterey HOA., Board of Directors, are dated April 16, 1974, and note the election of Frank Fogelman as our president. It was at this time that a non-reproducible key-lock system was adopted for what was then called the Recreation Center. A lock that could be opened by a homeowner key was installed on the center's front door, on one of the three back doors, on the door to the sauna and bathrooms, on the pool gates (there were two), and on the jacuzzi gate. One homeowner key was to be provided free of charge to each homeowner. A 2nd key could be purchased for $10. Additional keys for $25 each. - How times have changed.

Particular challenges in 1974 concerned the noise resulting from the pool's remaining open throughout the night. However, as a result of a citation from the Noise Abatement Council, the Directors voted on October 2nd to close the pool area at 10 p.m. and to reopen it the following morning at 8 a.m. Another challenge arose when one or another of the taxis provided daily by Ponderosa to transport Elementary students failed repeatedly to arrive. This vexing situation continued throughout much of the year - until Ponderosa agreed to provide a school bus. On a lighter note, Dick McIntyre won the contest to provide a logo for the Association's newsletter. In appreciation, the Directors agreed to present him with a magnum of champagne e. Happy days, indeed!

MORE NOSTALGIA

A continuing search of our early records reveals yet another promotional pamphlet prepared by Ponderosa Homes. Here's just a bit of the pitch to attract buyers. Note too, the writer violates many of the dictates of traditional English grammar and mechanics.

Villa Monterey townhomes provide a natural refuge from the hustle of work and iii, hassle of conventional home ownership. Because Villa Monterey offers some decidedly unconventional features. Your home's exterior, for example. Not only does it display natural California textures of stucco, rugged resawn wood, and shake roofs, it also offers built-in" maintenance. Through the Homeowners' Association. By professionals. And your landscaping will receive professional care as well. So the time you otherwise would have to spend puttering around the house and yard can be put to better use - at your private recreation center. Where you can keep yourself in shape by swimming strenuous laps. Or laze the day away basking in the sun beside the pool. Or maybe relax in the sauna for a spell, to feel its warmth replacing the kinks and tension of a hard day's work. And there couldn't be a more beautiful setting for the exciting easy of life offered by condominium ownership. Nestled in a very private section of Tierrasanta, Villa Monterey overlooks a natural canyon laced with hiking and biking trails and unspoiled greenery.
RATS!

A Park Crest resident called to report that neighbors appear to be using "rat" poison to discourage rodents from using their Patios. The problem is that she has a fountain on her patio and rodents who eat the poison are dehydrated and seek water. The consequence: dead animals on her patio. Unsettling to say the least.

POOL UPDATE

For the next three months, on a trial basis, the pool will open for 'lap" swimmers only between 7 and 8 a.m. daily.

POOL MANNERS

Please note that 6-7 p.m. is reserved for "lap" swimming. We'll soon have a portable sign up reminding pool users.

POOL GATE

We have had the lock on the pool gate repaired in the past thirty days and we must do so again. Please do not use force when inserting your key into the lock - on either side of the gate. Be sure that you are using the right key. As this is a special lock, repairs are never inexpensive.

VISITORS OF NOTE

An Edge Park resident has had an unusually busy and exciting summer. No small part of that excitement was provoked by her son-in law's transfer to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The Lieut. Colonel had been serving in Washington D.C. area: first, as the Marine Liaison to the Director of Naval Intelligence and then as the US Central Command area, analyst assigned to the Intelligence Division staff, Headquarters Marine Corps. His present assignment is as G-l-, Intelligence Officer, to the Commanding General 3rd MAW.

With him are his wife and their six-year old son. Until their quarters are ready, they're staying in Villa Monterey. In particular, the transition for the family was eased by the warm welcome of HOA neighbors. Their son made many friends, enjoyed the pool, and loved the dogs. They want to extend a special thanks to their neighbors.
