DOGS YOU'LL MEET

Honor is a 9-yr old yellow lab owned by R. She has the particular distinction of being a "Seeing Eye" guide dog. Some 7 years ago, R spent 4 weeks meeting and learning to work with Honor at the Seeing Eye facility in Morristown, NJ. The flight to and from San Diego, as well as his board and lodging -- not to mention Honor -- cost R a total of 150.00. When the time comes to retire her, Honor's replacement will cost R $50.00 -- testament to the Seeing Eye's commitment to the visually handicapped.

Of course, this is a dog that can go anywhere R goes: to Vons or to the hospital. And when R goes by bus so does Honor. Best of all, she always remembers how she got to a particular place and then how she got back. And she can find the car she came in. As well, Honor knows words like "bank", "store", "vet", and "bench". She knows, too, to guide R to the push button that changes particular street lights. R remembers the time some three years ago when he was struck by a car in the UTC area. Honor did her best to pull him out of the auto's path but when he was knocked to the ground, she lay beside him until the ambulance came. Then the police took her home. Those who see her in her working harness need to know that she's all business. But when on a lead, she has time to "love" people. You're editor salutes a remarkable animal.

CLASSIC VIDEOS

As a university professor, your editor was strongly committed to the use of vintage films with his classes. And he found Elerhostel participants no less drawn to the films of Hollywood's golden era. As space permits, he'll suggest titles you might like to rent -- some are available for purchase at modest prices.

By way of example, 42nd Street (1933), the first really "classic" film musical that introduced audiences to Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler, the quintessential juvenile and ingenue of the 1930s, whose message was that the young and healthy could succeed with diligence and with a little luck. The Powell- Keller team, however, remain incidental to the dance spectacles devised by Busby Berkeley. The latter were "glorious fun" and the public loved them, a "tonic" for these depression times.

To view 42nd Street Today is to re-enter that world in which a raw kid from the chorus can go out there a youngster and come back a star.

GARAGE VENTS

Mike, our maintenance supervisor, reminds us that the Uniform Building Code requires a vent area (144 square inches per car) within 6 inches of the floor in all attached garages. The latter to prevent carbon monoxide residual. Covering the vents is not only illegal but dangerous.
